Large Format Printing Materials Guide: PVC, Mesh, Displays and What to Use in Nairobi

A practical Nairobi guide to choosing PVC, mesh, roll-up banners, backdrops and flags for different large-format printing applications.

Large-format printing covers graphics that are bigger than ordinary office and commercial print formats. In Nairobi, that includes PVC and mesh banners, roll-up displays, backdrops, flags, exhibition graphics and other branded materials used in shops, events, construction sites, offices and outdoor promotions.

The most useful way to choose a large-format product is to start with the environment and purpose, not with the printing machine. A fence banner exposed to wind needs a different solution from a portable conference display that must fit into a carry bag.

1. PVC banner printing

PVC is the general-purpose option for custom-size promotional banners. It provides a solid printed surface and works for many indoor and outdoor applications.

Typical uses include shop promotions, event signage, property marketing, school and church events, brand campaigns and temporary outdoor advertising. Xpress PVC banner printing currently starts from KES 800 per square metre.

Choose PVC when you need flexible dimensions and a conventional hanging or mounted banner rather than a complete portable display system.

2. Mesh banner printing

Mesh is perforated, allowing more air to pass through the printed surface. This makes it a useful starting point for exposed fences, construction boundaries and other locations where a large solid banner would face more wind pressure.

Xpress mesh banner printing also starts from KES 800 per square metre. The decision between PVC and mesh should therefore be based on the location and application rather than assuming one material must always be cheaper.

For a detailed comparison, read our PVC vs mesh outdoor banner guide.

3. Roll-up banner printing

Roll-up banners combine a printed graphic with a retractable stand. They are designed for portability and repeated use at conferences, exhibitions, reception areas, offices and launches.

Xpress currently lists standard roll-up systems from KES 6,500. Because the hardware is part of the product, roll-up pricing should not be compared directly with a square-metre PVC print rate.

Choose a roll-up when you need a self-standing display that can be packed away and moved between venues.

4. Event backdrop printing

Backdrops create a larger branded surface for photography, press areas, stages, launches and exhibition spaces. The printed graphic may be supplied with a reusable frame depending on the selected system.

Xpress event backdrops currently start from KES 15,000, while larger media-wall configurations are quoted according to size and hardware.

If the backdrop is mainly for photography, design it around the people who will stand in front of it rather than placing all important branding in the centre.

5. Flags and vertical event displays

Feather flags and teardrop banners are designed for vertical visibility. They work well at entrances, activations, retail fronts and outdoor events where a wide wall-mounted graphic is not practical.

The correct system depends on the flag height and the ground or floor surface. A ground spike, cross base and weighted base are not interchangeable.

6. Pop-up and exhibition displays

Pop-up systems create a larger portable display wall for exhibitions, launches and branded booths. They are useful when a business needs a more substantial visual presence than a single roll-up banner.

For a 3 × 3 metre exhibition stand, a strong layout may combine one main backdrop or pop-up display with one or two supporting roll-ups rather than filling every available surface with graphics.

See our 3 × 3 exhibition booth branding guide for a practical planning example.

How to choose the right large-format material

Ask these five questions before deciding:

Where will it be used?

Indoor exhibition hall, retail shop, outdoor fence, stage, roadshow or office reception each creates different requirements.

How far away will people view it?

The viewing distance affects the amount of text, image detail and overall size. A roadside message should be simpler than an exhibition graphic people can approach closely.

Does it need to move?

If the display travels between events, reusable hardware such as a roll-up, backdrop frame or pop-up system may offer more value than a one-off mounted banner.

Will it face wind or weather?

Outdoor exposure influences the material, finishing, base and installation method. Share the installation environment before approving production.

How long does it need to last?

A one-day indoor event and a repeated exhibition schedule justify different investments in reusable hardware and finishing.

What resolution should large-format artwork use?

There is no single DPI number that works for every large-format project because final size and viewing distance matter. A graphic viewed from several metres away does not need the same pixel density as a small printed item viewed close to the face.

What matters most is supplying artwork that is suitable for the final proportions and contains sufficiently high-quality logos and images. Vector logos are especially useful because they can scale without pixelation.

RGB or CMYK for large-format printing?

Screens emit light while printed graphics reproduce colour with inks. Some bright colours that look vivid on a phone or monitor cannot be reproduced exactly in print.

If brand colour accuracy is important, provide the correct brand references and flag critical colours before production. Do not rely only on how a colour appears on an uncalibrated screen.

How to compare two large-format printing quotes

Make sure both quotations cover the same specification. Compare:

The cheapest quote can be the most expensive choice if it excludes the frame, finishing or logistics you actually need.

Large-format printing for events

For conferences, exhibitions and launches, think of large-format printing as a coordinated system rather than separate products.

A typical event may use:

Large-format printing for shops and businesses

A retail campaign may combine an outdoor PVC banner with an indoor roll-up display. A showroom may use flags outside, window or promotional graphics at the entrance and portable displays around featured products.

Instead of ordering a material first, identify the customer touchpoints that need visibility and choose the print format for each location.

Large-format printing for construction and perimeter sites

Large fence graphics can create strong visibility, but the installation environment matters. For open or wind-exposed fencing, mesh may be more appropriate than solid PVC. Measurements and fixing points should be checked before artwork is finalised.

What should you send for an accurate large-format quote?

If you do not know the correct material, send the location, approximate dimensions and how the graphic will be used. The product recommendation should come from the application.

Large-format printing FAQs

What is the cheapest large-format material?

Price should be compared within the correct application. Xpress publishes PVC and mesh from KES 800/m², but a portable display includes hardware and is therefore priced differently.

Can large-format graphics be used outdoors?

Yes, depending on the material, finishing and installation method. The level of exposure should be considered before production.

Can I print one custom-size banner?

Yes. PVC and mesh are particularly suited to custom dimensions.

Can you design the artwork?

Yes. If you do not have print-ready artwork, include your logo, message, brand colours and required dimensions in the brief.
